Shafiq Ahmad is a distinguished lawyer and human rights defender currently living in exile. He is widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to civilian supremacy, democratic accountability, and the defense of fundamental human rights in Pakistan.
Shafiq has been a fearless critic of the Pakistani military’s deep and unchecked role in political life, as well as its extensive record of human rights violations—including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and systematic suppression of dissent. His advocacy spans across all persecuted communities, including the Pashtun and Baloch people and others subjected to state violence.
Through his active presence on social media, Shafiq continues to expose systemic injustices and challenge authoritarian policies. As a result of his outspoken stance, he has faced severe state retaliation. He was abducted and forcibly disappeared twice—in June and December 2019—during which he was subjected to torture and incommunicado detention. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has filed multiple criminal charges against him over the years, including under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), with legal harassment continuing as recently as March 2025.
Despite this relentless persecution, Shafiq remains resolute in his legal and advocacy work. His bravery has earned widespread recognition and support from leading human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Front Line Defenders, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OIAD), and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP)—all of which have condemned the abuses he has faced and raised serious concerns for his safety.
In an environment where speaking truth to power often invites repression, Shafiq Ahmad continues to be a powerful and principled voice for justice, democracy, and the rule of law in Pakistan.
